This groundbreaking course from the National Council for Behavioral Health gives participants the tools to identify when someone might be struggling with a mental health or substance use problem and to connect them with appropriate support and resources.

Today at GFESC, Karen Grady is leading a session called Reeling in the Outcast Student. In this session, participants will:
- Take an in-depth look at what our society defines as an "outcast student."
-Explore answers to issues about why a student is considered an outcast.
-How we get them to buy into the classroom culture.
-How we get them involved in the learning that is taking place.
-How we meet their educational and emotional needs in the classroom.


3-6 RISE Day 3: Morphology is going on now at GFESC! Participants will develop an understanding of how the sound, structure, and history of our language all work together to influence the pronunciation, spelling, and meaning of words. Yesterday we had a wonderful workshop led by Katelyn Chambers on Special Healthcare Needs - Train the Trainer. This session provided an overview for the RN on how to implement special healthcare needs training within their district and provided information related to personal care.

Elizabeth Reeves was back on campus today leading another workshop on Dyslexia. Today's workshop was about School-based Identification of Dyslexia which targeted grades 4-12. It covered legislative updates and best practices for identifying dyslexia characteristics in older students using assessment data.

Brie Norton and Lynsey Phillips were back at GFESC today with two very I nformative workshops. This morning they taught Hands on AAC: Supporting Learners with Complex Needs which helped participants create lessons that support AAC users in achieving authentic communication. This afternoon they taught Assistive Touch Technology in the Classroom which offered an in-depth introduction to assistive technology. Thank you both for your participation this week!

A huge shoutout to the Lavaca Public School District for hosting the conference this week.




Getting started with AAC can be extremely overwhelming! This morning's workshop introduced participants to a variety of AAC systems and access methods. They also explored how to select the right system, determine an appropriate vocabulary, and how to acquire a device through an evaluation. This afternoon, participants learned the foundational components necessary to effectively teach using AAC devices.
