Job Description
Job Title: Paraprofessional
Reports To: GFESC Director Days: 190
Primary Purpose:
Performs instructional support work directly assisting identified students ages 3-5 to develop learning readiness, pre-reading, reading and/or mathematics skills through a planned supplementary program. This position is responsible for providing instructional and/or behavioral support to special education students in high needs programs under the direction of a licensed special education teacher. The ability to organize and maintain a behavior improvement program and provide one-on-one counseling as needed is required. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general direction of a certified staff member and is reviewed through conferences and results obtained.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification
High School Diploma or equivalent
Must complete required state credentialing requirements (Background check, Fingerprinting)
Ability to complete records accurately and timely.
Special Knowledge/Skills

*Must be able to follow oral and written directions and have the ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and students.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Part 1 - Major Duties and Responsibilities
Instructs individuals or small groups of students under the guidance of a certified teacher or diagnostician.
Provide all tasks requested by the professional for special services to the children being served.
Be familiar with each child’s goals, behaviors, and personality.
Participates in staff development activities.
Consult with parents of children as directed and requested by professional staff.
Confers with teacher, behavior specialist and other professional and administrative staff on student progress and problems.
Assist students with preparing for and moving to other classrooms, school activities, outside activities and arrival and departure from school.
Help students with clothing, grooming, health habits, and bathroom activities as needed.
Communicate to the teacher any unusual situations or needs of students. Notify immediately appropriate personnel of any evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical conditions, potential suicide, or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, or controlled substances.
Assist the teacher in handling interruptions and emergencies.
Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines
Support children in their social/emotional, physical , and cognitive and creative growth
NEVER leave a child unsupervised
May perform some routine clerical activities, as the need arises.
Performs related work, as required.

Constant walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 50 to 100 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to 40 pounds may be required. Other physical activities may be required.
