Migrant Education Student Support Specialist

Duties of the GFESC Migrant Education Student Support Specialist include:

  • Utilize the resources of the home, school, and community to maximize the experience of schooling for eligible migrant students’ ages 3-21 in attainment of a high school diploma or its equivalent.

  • Provide instructional support in Reading, GED & Life Skills for Out of School Youth (OSY) as needed.

  • Provide instructional support to preschoolers aged 3-5 towards kindergarten readiness, which is usually in the home setting.

  • Maintain effective communication with other migrant education staff and the migrant education office.

  • Interpret and translate as needed for parents, staff, and school personnel as supplemental service when applicable.

  • Help plan, conduct, and evaluate the summer school program and summer in home program.

Duties of the Migrant Recruiter include:

  • Identification and Recruitment of all eligible migrant children and youth, from age three through age 21, within the assigned service area.

  • Conduct eligibility interviews with migrant families and youth to complete Certificates of Eligibility (COEs).

  • Visit agricultural worksites, processing plants, migrant camps, and other areas where migrant families and OSY may be living or working.

  • Promote parent engagement by sharing program information and encouraging participation in school activities and Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meetings.

  • Complete all required documentation, including Certificates of Eligibility (COEs) and weekly or monthly recruitment reports.

  • Maintain confidential and up-to-date student and family records.

  • Participate in all required local, regional, and state training sessions for recruiters and program staff.

  • Stay informed on current federal and state regulations governing the Migrant Education Program and proper identification and recruitment procedures.

This position does require a current driver’s license and personal transportation.

This position requires a “highly qualified” person. This person must hold a high school diploma (or GED) and meet one of three criteria: completing at least 60 semester credit hours at a regionally accredited institution, obtaining an associate's degree (or higher), or passing the ETS Parapro Assessment with a score of 457.
